Being diagnosed with cancer is a profound shock. Perhaps more than any other disease the combination of facing your own mortality together with unappealing treatment options has the potential to knock the stuffing right out of you. Stress levels rocket, anxiety levels peak, and life seems to lose its lustre.
Just when you know you should be looking after yourself better than ever, it becomes increasingly difficult to do so. Medical treatment can add to the feeling of being under the weather – or feeling very ill indeed. And while the treatments may be justified in the long term, there’s little doubt they play havoc with your short term health.
Against this background, getting your nutrition right is the single most powerful thing you can do to improve your health and happiness. It underpins and supports all your other efforts to be healthy, and has the potential to gently and naturally reverse all sorts of problems – even serious, apparently irreversible disease.
Nutritional therapy recognises that everyone is different: we each have a subtly different genetic and biochemical structure which means that we have different nutritional needs. We also have different lifestyles, which affects our overall requirement for and utilisation of nutrients. My practice is all about finding the precise diet and lifestyle choices that will help you recover your vitality and function at your best
I base my work on the Functional Medicine model. It’s the medicine of aetiology not symptomology: seeking to get to the root cause of your problems, and asking not only ‘what’s wrong?’ but what caused it to go wrong and how can we fix it. The aim with functional medicine is to rebalance the body to work as nature intended: a bit like restoring your body to factory settings. Armed with an understanding of your genes and metabolic function, we can even improve on nature in many cases making up for innate nutrient or enzymatic imbalances.
We will start with a comprehensive review of your health, diet, and lifestyle before focussing in on the areas that are of particular concern. We’ll look back over your life history too, identifying the patterns and events that have led to your current state of health. It’s a rigorous process which often sheds new light on the origins, triggers and progression of your problems, helping us both reach a better understanding of what’s going on and, more importantly, what to do about it.
As part of this process we may agree that we need more information, in which case I can commission functional biochemical tests (for example to measure hormonal balance or digestive function) to help us see exactly what’s going on. Not everyone needs this but it’s good to know it’s available.
Our first meeting will take 2 hours, either at my home or on Skype/Facetime. As well as finding out more about your health we will also discuss your food preferences, lifestyle constraints and talk about how much support you may need to make it all come together. Then we’ll make a plan and after the meeting I’ll write it up for you with a clear explanation of what’s going on, a list of priorities, foods to eat and avoid, a personalised diet plan to get you on track, and some suggestions for further reading or other things you can do to improve your health.
If you’re a self-starter that may be all you need, but if you have more complex health needs, a particularly busy life, or if you simply want some extra support, I would recommend that you read about my Intensive Care Programme which offers excellent value and continued support. Many of my clients decide to include some Coaching to help them change the habits that are undermining their wellbeing and build new, more effective daily routines.
I hope that’s a thorough explanation but if you have any more questions you’re welcome to contact me below.
