Empower Your Recovery

“If you do not change direction you may end up where you are heading” – Lao Tzu

For more than two decades, breast cancer has been the focus of my life, both personally and professionally. During that time I have helped myself and hundreds of women to transform their lives.

When cancer turns your life upside-down, it also gives you permission to put everything back together again in a way that suits you better than before. For most people it’s the beginning of a whole new understanding of wellbeing, and the start of a more loving and respectful relationship with themselves.

Conventional cancer treatment tends to ignore the potential for diet and lifestyle choices to contribute to health – either to alleviate symptoms during treatment or to improve  survival. But it’s common sense! Even without the masses of evidence accruing in favour of lifestyle change, we know it makes perfect sense to support your natural healing mechanisms while also taking advantage of the miracles of modern medicine. Some of the most exciting research I’ve seen in recent years is showing that combining conventional and complementary care can significantly extend disease-free survival and improve chances of remission. Your best chance of beating this complex disease is to hit it from as many angles as possible at the same time.

My aim is to transform the way you think about cancer by sharing the knowledge that I have spent the last twenty years gathering — to broaden your understanding, supplement your knowledge, rekindle your hope and revive your fighting spirit. I regularly hear myself inviting cancer patients to see their recovery as a full time job: there’s a lot of work to do to restore a healthy tissue microenvironment once cancer has developed, but the potential rewards are priceless.

I will work with you step by step, at your own pace, to help you make profound and lasting changes to your diet and lifestyle. Using my clinical experience, your self-knowledge and – if necessary – drawing a range of specialised functional and nutrigenetic tests, we can co-create a highly personalised and detailed picture of your situation which will allow us to tailor the changes to your diagnosis, treatment and biochemistry, and provide inspiration for further avenues of exploration relevant to your situation.

You can connect with me at any time on your cancer journey and I’ve outlined some of the crucial stages below. Then, when you’re ready, you can book an appointment online.

Dealing with Diagnosis

Not many people remember the day of their diagnosis in a positive way, but I always look back on it as the day I got my ‘second chance’. It’s the perfect opportunity to take control of your health, and get to grips with underlying factors that may have increased your cancer risk and contributed to the unhealthy ‘tumour microenvironment’.

Making wiser diet and lifestyle choices can help you to feel more empowered and positive as you come to terms with your diagnosis, and may also enhance treatment outcomes and minimise side effects. In fact, anything you can do to change your habits and enhance your wellbeing after diagnosis is likely to help you beat the statistics behind your diagnosis.

Making the Most of Treatment

Combined conventional and complementary therapy is an increasingly interesting area of research, and a growing number of studies are supporting the idea that well-planned nutrition and lifestyle strategies may help to increase the effectiveness of radio-, chemo- and immunotherapy and to reduce the impact of the well-known side effects. Doing everything you can to maximise the effect of your treatment is a great feeling – and can help you see the silver lining during the difficult weeks of treatment.

Finding A New Normal

Over the years many clients have told me that the most difficult time to be a cancer patient is the day after treatment stops; that was my experience too. It’s a strange feeling – after long and gruelling months of drugs and hospitals and scans and checkups you’ve finally got your life back. You’re desperate to get back to normal – but you also need to find a ‘new normal’ because your old habits led to a cancer diagnosis. Which makes it the perfect time to throw yourself wholeheartedly into creating a new healthy routine – to redesign your life from the inside out, one day at a time, and change your body from ‘cancer friendly’ to ‘cancer-hostile’.

Getting into Your Genes

For clients who want to go the extra mile, nutrigenomic testing can help you understand the interaction of your genes and diet. It’s the ultimate in diet and lifestyle personalisation using the power of nutrigenetic testing to look at the influence of diet and lifestyle on your genes to uncover personal glitches (or SNPs) that may increase your cancer risk. Covering important cancer-related areas like oestrogen balance, liver detoxification, problems with nutrient transport and activation, anxiety and stress response, antioxidant capacity and inflammatory tendencies. It’s a bit like getting your very own User Manual.

Finding Your Voice

For clients looking for a deeper level of life transformation, life coaching can help you become more self-supporting and life-affirming. Many of my past clients can recall urgent inner voices telling them to change long before diagnosis, mixed with stronger messages that were telling them not to rock the boat. We all have these ‘voices’ helping or hindering us in our life and health choices; they are often subconscious, and it can be immensely helpful to bring them out into the open. Using the widely respected Transactional Analysis model developed by Eric Berne in the 1960s, we can look at your ‘inner conversations’ on a more conscious level so that you can begin to identify your own needs and wants more clearly within the context of the other pressures in your life. From here you can begin to make better choices that support everyone in your life, including you!

Comprehensive Cancer Support

Nutrition and lifestyle changes can provide powerful leverage every step of the way as you deal with your diagnosis, improving your experience as you go through treatment, speeding up your recovery, encouraging you to explore a wide range of healing options, and helping you face the future with more optimism.

The latest research into cancer is mind-blowing in terms of our understanding of the biochemical reactions and pathways involved in cancer, but research shows time and again that we need to get the basics right first: diet, sleep, stress, exercise, hydration, breathing. The introductory package will give you valuable insights into your personal situation and the most important things you can do to stay healthy. After that you can continue to work with me for as long (or short) as you like.

We can cover a lot of ground in a sixty minute session. I will follow up each session with key action points and details of any supplements and other resources we discuss and I encourage clients to take notes or even record sessions to make the most of what we talk about. If we book an online appointment it may even be possible to send you a link to a recording of our meeting. To understand more about how we can work together – and if we will get on well – you can book an introductory appointment using this link.

You’re not alone

Finding the right person to work with is an important part of the equation. For starters, you might like to read some of the other pages on my website about cancer, genes and lifestyle, so that you get a feel for the way I think. Or look at the testimonials to see how other clients have benefited. Then, please book appointment on my online booking page. Consultations can take place face-to-face at my home in Southborough, Kent, or via Skype/FaceTime.

Walking my talk

The only way I can give a genuine bespoke service, keep abreast of the current research, and look after myself in the way I recommend to my clients, is to limit the number of clients I work with at any one time. This means there may be a short wait before a space is available.
